The maze medium offers a rich visual vocabulary. Pathways, dead ends, intersections, starts, and finishes are fundamental to thought. Thus, it is not surprising that ideas emerge that translate elegantly into the maze form. However, a maze designer treads a thin line when devising a representational maze; representational mazes fall easily into the realm of maze hacks. Far too often, the maze form plays the role of space-filler in a representational maze. To avoid going astray, the maze designer is advised to represent ideas with the structure of the passages, not the superficial appearance of the maze.
