Labyrinths
In a labyrinth, the explorer need not decide which path to take—there is only one path to follow, from start to end. I have great admiration for the explorer of labyrinth. The explorer is committed to carefully following the maze designer’s train of thought, without interrupting or objecting. To do so, requires discipline, patience, and openness. Since the maze explorer has offered herself so completely to the maze designer, he has a great responsibility to satisfy her desires for pleasure and inspiration.
My to-do list for this category:
- Labyrinths are intrinsically meditative and soothing. Terry McGuire, for example, provides the travelers of his Little Journeys with a contemplative pleasure. Terry's labyrinths and writings have inspired me to conduct an experiment: I will create a sadistic labyrinth. While there will only be one path for the explorer to follow, I will do my best to overwhelm and confuse her, even tempt her into accidentally crossing the labyrinth wall. The goal of this experiment is to shed light on the meditative quality of labyrinths by designing a labyrinth that dwells in an opposite quality. RESOLVED.
